One sip of Tokyo
rum will have you reciting
haikus to strangers
There came I day when I set out to sea
With a bottle of rum and a head full of cloud
The wind at my back, I was happy as can be
Rum in hand, head high and proud
Those early days brought summer weather
And ocean salt blew freely through my hair
Many sips of grog and I was light as a feather
Rollicking and roving without any care
Yet the innocent times were not to last
For dark tidings loomed beyond the breach
A powerful storm destroyed the ship’s mast
Foolish was I, grasping beyond my reach
From a watery grave let my tale unfold
N’er the rum make you a sailor bold
The link between pirates and rum has been immortalised in popular culture, yet few stories tell of the connection between a pirate parrot and a bottle of grog. This is the kind of tale that’s told through Ron Piet 10-Year, an easy-sipping Panamanian rum bottled by the Knut Hansen gin distillery in Hamburg, Germany.
So, come and learn about the voyage of a brigadier’s bird and the flavours of a rum that is sure to leave its mark on your tastebuds.

Birds of a feather
broken beaked eyepatches
drink rum together
Imagine Don Juan
drinking Don Papa today
your mate at the bar.
Pick up a bottle
The beating heart of Haiti
rum blooded and bold
Half the fun of being a rum geek is comparing tasting notes with other rum geeks and finding unique flavours and similarities. With that said, I’ve decided to do a taste comparison against the notes of The Rum Slinger with their box of Latin Grammys, AKA a pack of three distinct sample rums from South America.
A love of rum can come from many places. For some people, it’s discovering it at a bar, for others it’s tied to family heritage. In Elaine Remy’s case, her rum connection came from her parents and it’s helped her launch a successful cake business.
The founder of UK-based brand Vie’s Jamaican Rum Cakes, Elaine specialises in creating beautiful rum cakes in honour of her mum. The recipient of several awards, Elaine has already caused quite a stir with her rummy treats.
The Rum Ration got in touch with her to learn more about the story of her cakes, the links between rum and the region of Cumbria and her plans for the future.
Rum and Caribbean culture go hand in hand, with every island having its own unique culture that’s sprung up around drinking, spirit production and lifestyle choices. A country that I find of particular interest in regards to rum is Grenada, as everyday life on the island is as distinctive as the rum that’s produced.
From moonshining to potent batches of overproof grog, let’s take a closer look at the rum culture of Grenada.
