To mark the occasion, I thought it’d be worth giving readers an idea of who exactly is behind The Rum Ration and go into more detail about myself. So, with that in mind, read on to learn more….
Who the hell is behind the Rum Ration?
Good question. Name’s Jamie Ryder and I started The Rum Ration as a project to help me learn more about rum and the rich history behind it. I’d drank rum in the past, but had never really given it any serious thought until I’d started getting into other complex beverages like Japanese sake and shochu.
With improving my knowledge about those drinks, it inspired me to start looking into western spirits and I came across the Rum Cast podcast by Will Hoekenga and John Gulla. The way they described rum as being this affordable, delicious and complex spirit reminded me of the joy of discovering the versatility of sake and shochu.
From there, I fell down the rum rabbit hole and came to realise how diverse the drink is and I’ve been enjoying going on my rum voyage ever since.
As I’m based in Manchester in the UK, I feel pretty lucky to have access to such a booming rum market. When not rambling about rum, you can find me moonlighting as a short story writer of fantasy fiction and being a pop culture journalist over at The Comic Vault and Yamato Magazine.
